Ides of March Update

My high school World History teacher somehow burned into my memory the observance of the Ides of March with the story of the assassination of Julius Caesar in 44 BC (or BCE, Before the Common Era, as the politically sensitive term puts it today).  He was stabbed 23 times.  Must have been quite a scene.  After 50 years, I still think of it every year. After three days of sunny, spring-like weather with ... Read More

Health Matters and Other Updates

Dealing With Health Issues Away From Home I have just spent the last week dealing with a bout of gout, of all things.  Yes, Gout!  It is a form of arthritis and is an extremely painful affliction.  It most often settles in the joint of the big toe, which it did for me on my left foot.  It rendered me nearly unable to walk for about three days, and able to walk with a great deal of pain for the next ... If You Break It, You Own It, or, How to Pay $13 for a Cup of Coffee (and other news)

I packed up all of my workout gear--both gym clothes and swimming gear--and set off to use my new health club membership for the first time.  My new workout venue is the Hangzhou Oakwook Health Club located in the Oakwood Residence, which is two towers of upscale condos with a Mercedes Benz dealership next door.  Anyone who lives in Oakwood Residence is certainly beyond my economic class.  However, health ... Monday, February 20: A few notes

Story update.  I've updated the story about the apartment, so if you looked at it when I first posted it, you may want to revisit it; I've added information you may find interesting. Weather. Today (Monday) is overcast again with temps in the mid-40s, but we had three beautiful sunny days in a row prior to that. Shopping. We took our first major shopping trip on Sunday afternoon.  As soon as I ... Read More

The Apartment

Our apartment is owned by the Hangzhou Foreign Languages School.  It's small, about 750 to 800 square feet.  It's in one building of several in the apartment complex.  Judging by the responses to Char's introductory slide show in class, in which she shows pictures of our house, we are guessing that most Chinese live in an apartment much like this.  Of course, this one does not get updated and ... What Time Is It

I have to tell you--the weather in Hangzhou has been overcast, wet or rainy for all but two days since our February 2nd arrival.  Temps have been in the high 30s and low 40s--not that cold by Minnesota standards, but the gray skies have a way of taking a toll on my morale.  I'm against it. Char has started school--that is, classes with students.  She leaves each morning at about 6:30, shortly after I go ... Read More

First Day At School; Cold and Rainy

Char was up at 5:30 this morning getting ready to take the bus to school.  Staff meetings today with Mr. Shen, Director of Foreign Affairs, and Bao were on the agenda.  She stepped out into a rainy, overcast morning of about 35° that saw a few snow flakes falling.  I had just finished work and was getting ready for bed. Char teaches 17 classes a week.  Her class schedule works well with mine in that ... Read More

China: First Days–Getting Organized; Buying Lunch

Our Restaurant. The very first time we went out to buy food, this is the menu that greeted us. Pretty daunting. Neither the menu nor the very kind young girl behind the counter contain a word of English--not that unusual in China, I suppose. Nevertheless, we managed to order noodle dishes for lunch, and were delighted with the result..We go back often. Our third day, Saturday, is a day of organization and writing. ... Read More

China: First Days–The Neighborhood

This is the market near our apartment. It is in a huge indoor structure which the accompanying photo attempts to show. It is packed with fresh produce, butchered beef, pork, and chicken, and filled with tanks of water containing fish and creepy crawly things and things that slither. Quite an experience to walk through. Notice the woman wearing a heavy coat as she attends her stand; temperature is about 35° to 40° ... Read More

About BoomerTrekker

When you travel, only one of two things can happen: something good or something bad; either way, you have a story to tell.

Boomertrekker.com is the cave wall on which I try to etch the stories and pictures of my travel experiences. You will find stories of setting out to go one place, but arriving at another; of finding, quite by accident, experiences that I could not have anticipated; of meeting and becoming friends with people whose language I cannot speak. Sometimes you will find me paralyzed and out of my comfort zone, as I was in Cambodia when I regretfully let pass my opportunity to eat a cricket. At other times, I hope you marvel, as I have, at the intelligence and ingenuity and inventiveness of ancient peoples everywhere. These are the stories I tell here. They are the stories of my travels to foreign lands in which I am the foreigner. Read More
